I recently finished Amanda Gorman’s poetry collection, Call Us What We Carry, and I am slightly hesitant to admit here publicly that I didn’t love it. I thought her performance of her inaugural poem, The Hill We Climb, was phenomenal. And that was part of what was missing from this published work. So much of Gorman’s power comes from her presence, her delivery, and the spoken rhythm of her poetry. While many of the poems were beautiful, others fell flat on paper. But maybe I was just spoiled by that yellow coat. Everyone else has been raving about the collection, so feel free to ignore me.

What we're reading: Call Us What We Carry, by Amanda Gorman
I just finished reading Susan Straight's memoir In the Company of Women. I couldn't/wouldn't put it down. Beautifully written and totally compelling.
