YOU get a chapter… and YOU get a chapter.. and YOU get a chapter!
The latest episode of Oprah’s Book Club just dropped, and SBC cofounder Guinevere de la Mare was in the studio to chat with Oprah Winfrey about Silent Book Club.
Oprah told a story early in the show about how the idea for her book club started with her and a friend exchanging books.
“Long before I had a book club, Alice and I would just read books and she’d pass off books, just like you do with your friends. And it was Alice who said to me one day, Oh you should start a book club and we should do this on the air.”
Sound familiar? That’s also how Silent Book Club started! Only Laura said to Guinevere, “we should do this in a bar” since we weren’t celebrity talk show hosts…
Unlike Silent Book Club, Oprah assigns reading for her club, and her book club pick is Wally Lamb’s latest novel, The River is Waiting. The story is intense—trigger warning for anyone who watches the full episode, it deals with the death of a child—so the segment discussing SBC was a welcome moment of levity. Especially Wally Lamb’s reaction to learning about Silent Book Club: “Wow, that’s cool!”
The taping took place at the Starbucks Headquarters in Seattle, so SBC Seattle organizers Dustin Backlund and Manali Joshi were able to join as audience members as well and meet up for a photo opp after the show. We had a blast!
The experience was surreal and amazing. We’re so grateful to Oprah and her team for inviting us onto the show and sharing Silent Book Club with their readers! We’ll be sharing more behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram, Facebook, and the blog in the coming days, so stay tuned!
