If you’ve been following Silent Book Club for awhile, you know we care deeply about the freedom to read, supporting small businesses, funding libraries and public schools, feeding children, LGBTQ+ and women’s rights, and getting out the vote.
In past elections, we have not endorsed specific candidates, preferring to focus on issues aligned with Silent Book Club’s values. At times we’ve received blowback. Reading is political, but comfortable in our own privilege, we let our audience read between the lines. However, we didn’t spend more than a decade building a smart, respectful, and principled community to then hide ourselves. We will not be silent when so much is at stake in this election.
As cofounders of Silent Book Club, we unequivocally support and endorse Kamala Harris to be the next president of the United States of America.
We encourage everyone to vote. Read up on your local issues and politicians and vote with your values. If you aren’t sure where or how to vote, check with vote.org. If you don’t know what your local initiatives are, look for city and state orgs that provide that. We find local NPR stations are fantastic resources, providing clear language and non-partisan perspective.
Book bans, library funding, election rules, and now even women’s bodies are being legislated by the state, so it’s critical that you vote all the way down the ballot for your local school board, state legislature, judges, election board, and more.
Every vote matters. Your voice matters. We will not be silent, and we hope you’ll join us.
“Silence becomes cowardice when occasion demands speaking out the whole truth and acting accordingly.”
