Summer of the introvert
Summer of the introvert
While a few Silent Book Club chapters in Italy and Toronto have resumed (safe, socially distanced, outdoor) meetups, here in the United States we'll be meeting via Zoom for the long term. More time at home means more time for reading, and long summer days offer up the gift of extra warmth and daylight for finishing a few more chapters on the back porch. It's also given us the opportunity to connect more authors with readers as we continue our series of virtual Silent Book Clubs.
Our evening with André Aciman, author of Call Me By Your Name and Find Me, was a complete delight. If you missed the live event, you can watch the recording on YouTube. While you're there, check out our past interviews with Angie Kim, author of Miracle Creek, and Marilyn Chase, author of Everything She Touched: The Life of Ruth Asawa.
Fans of legal thrillers, mark your calendars for July 21, when we'll be chatting with James Bostwick about his book, Acts of Omission. And if you're looking for a smart and funny summer romcom that skewers lawnmower parents, tech bros, and white privilege—San Francisco, I'm looking at you—pick up a copy of Tiny Imperfections. We can't wait for authors Alli Frank and Asha Youmans to spill all the tea on private school admissions shenanigans when we chat on July 28. RSVP here to save your spot.
To wrap up, we have been heartened by the outpouring of support for black-owned bookstores that we have seen on social media and in the news. Thank you to everyone who has skipped Amazon to place an order with a local, independent bookshop. Please continue your support and heed the words of Lin-Manuel Miranda (yes, we watched Hamilton last weekend), "This is not a moment, it's the movement." Black booksellers are wary that this will be a passing trend. It's up to us as readers to not let that happen.
Stay well,
Guinevere & Laura
