Silence isn't the answer.
I meant to send out this newsletter on Friday, and this intro used to be about cramming to hit my Goodreads Reading Challenge goal by the end of the year. But I can't send that newsletter to you. Because right now, there are people who need help. And staying silent isn't the answer.
As many of you know, I live in California, where hundreds of thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes and dozens of lives have been lost in the most destructive wildfires in California history. Every wildfire replaces the last as the worst, and with climate change outpacing scientists' predictions and models, this trend will only get worse.
The Camp Fire is nearly 200 miles away but the air quality in San Francisco has been so bad over the past three days, I have not been able to leave the house without a respirator mask. The fact that I even have N95 masks for my family on hand at all times is a testament to how precarious our daily existence has become. This is our new normal.
Our hearts break for the Californians who have lost everything. Here is a list of organizations collecting donations for wildfire victims and support for firefighters and the heroes who are fighting at the front line. Please help.
If you are a Silent Book Club member who has been affected by these fires, please email me and Laura so that we can help however we can.
